OTHELLO is the story of a powerful general in the Venetian army, who as a Moor is still an outsider. When the scheming Iago is passed over for a promotion in favor of the younger Michael Cassio, he hatches a plan to manipulate Othello into thinking his young Venetian wife is unfaithful to him with Cassio. A classic tale of the devastating effects of jealousy and suspicion, and one of the earliest works dealing directly with race.

Roles will be assigned at the beginning of the event and rotated throughout the play without regard to traditional casting considerations, to give a chance to everyone who wants to read.

We will have a limited number of copies available, so if you have a copy of your own, please bring it.

Open Mic Shakespeare – Merry Wives of Windsor – April 7 @ 7pm

Come and take a part in OPEN MIC SHAKESPEARE, an ongoing series of free, open readings of Shakespeare plays sponsored by the Cleveland Shakespeare Festival.

On Monday, April 7 at 7pm, we’re meeting at Negative Space Gallery and Cafe, located in the AsianTown Plaza building at 3820 Superior Ave. Free parking and the entrance to the building is located off of 38th St (Lots B and C) between Payne and Superior. MERRY WIVES OF WINDSOR is Shakespeare’s sitcom – and a spinoff at that!  Fat, lusty knight Jack Falstaff, made famous in the Henry IV and V plays, returns in this comedy set among the Elizabethan middle-class.  Falstaff has designs to seduce two wealthy wives in town, but the wives (and one particularly jealous husband) have plans of their own for him.

Beer, wine and beverages are available for a donation.

Roles will be assigned at the beginning of the event and rotated throughout the play without regard to traditional casting considerations, to give a chance to everyone who wants to read.

We will have a limited number of copies available, so if you have a copy of your own, please bring it.

Open Mic Shakespeare moved again – Tuesday, Jan 14

Due to a scheduling conflict with our generous hosts at the fabulous and funky Negative Space Gallery, we need to shift to Tuesday, January 14 at 7pm for this month’s reading of Antony and Cleopatra.

As A&C is one of the longer works, we’ll be reading through Act 3 in this meeting.

Apologies for all the changes, and our continued thanks to Negative Space for their hospitality and good will.

2014 Open Mic Shakespeare Schedule

On the first Monday of each month, we gather in an informal, social setting, for the pleasure of speaking and hearing the verse aloud.

January 14: Antony and Cleopatra
February 3: Antony and Cleopatra (conclusion)
March 3: Julius Caesar
April 7: Merry Wives of Windsor
May 5: Much Ado About Nothing
June 2: Timon of Athens
July 7: Othello

August-Dec: TBA

We meet at the Negative Space Gallery and Cafe, at E 38th and Superior, in the AsianTown Plaza shopping center.  Come early to have a drink and socialize.  Reading begins at 7pm.

Roles are distributed prior to reading, and we switch it up each act, so there are plenty of chances to read a variety of roles.

Limited copies of the script will be available, so please bring your own if you have one. Free apps are available for iPad and Android with the complete works.

We welcome all comers, regardless of acting experience. It’s even OK if you just want to come and listen, although often folks can’t resist the fun and join in before the evening’s over.
