Open Mic Shakespeare – TUESDAY, Sep 2 at 7pm – HAMLET

Come and take a part in OPEN MIC SHAKESPEARE, an ongoing series of free, open readings of Shakespeare plays sponsored by the Cleveland Shakespeare Festival.

On TUESDAY, September 2 at 7pm, we’re meeting at Negative Space Gallery and Cafe, located in the AsianTown Plaza building at 3820 Superior Ave. Free parking and the entrance to the building is located off of 38th St (Lots B and C) between Payne and Superior. Take the stairs or elevator to the second floor.
Find out more about them at their website: http://www.thinknegativespace.com/.

Considered one of the most powerful tragedies in the English language, Hamlet is also widely regarded as both the best of Shakespeare’s work and “the perfect play”. Set in the kingdom of Denmark, the play’s hero, Prince Hamlet, is compelled to exact revenge on his Uncle Claudius for both the murder of his father, King Hamlet and his Uncle’s subsequent succession to the throne and marriage to Gertrude, Hamlet’s mother. Guilty of his nephew’s accusations and fearful of his intent, Claudius eventually manipulates Laertes, the son of his ally Polonius, into a lethal fencing match with Hamlet by leading him to believe that Hamlet murdered Polonius. Laertes also believes that Hamlet was responsible for the death of his sister Ophelia who committed suicide in a state of madness and grief for her love of Hamlet. A duel between Hamlet and Laertes takes place deciding the fates of all concerned.

Because the play is so long and so rich, we’ll be reading the first half of the play this month, and follow up with the conclusion next month.

Roles will be assigned at the beginning of the event and rotated throughout the play without regard to traditional casting considerations, to give a chance to everyone who wants to read.

Our readings are BYOB – Bring Your Own Bottle and Bring Your Own Bard! We will have a limited number of copies available, so if you have a copy of your own, please bring it.
Likewise, there may be some beer, wine, coffee or tea available for donation but if you have a thirst for something specific, bring it yourself.

Roles are distributed prior to reading, and we switch it up each act, so there are plenty of chances to read a variety of roles.

BYOB – Bring Your Own Bottle (if you care to have a drink) and Bring Your Own Bard – limited copies of the script will be available, so please bring your own if you have one.
Free apps are available for iPad and Android with the complete works.

We welcome all comers, regardless of acting experience. It’s even OK if you just want to come and listen, although often folks can’t resist the fun and join in before the evening’s over.
